Investigation in Uruguay: Bloodfarm Biomega

From December 2023 to May 2024, our field teams regularly monitored the Biomega blood farm in Melo, Uruguay. At this facility, the fertility hormone PMSG is extracted from the blood of pregnant mares and used to enhance efficiency in industrial animal breeding.

The treatment of the mares at Biomega is both unprofessional and brutal. The terrified mares are forcefully restrained in holding boxes, repeatedly traumatizing them. The physical condition of many blood mares is dire. We observe extremely emaciated and lame mares, as well as those with untreated wounds. Some lie exhausted on the ground after blood extraction. We see no foals in the herds, indicating that pregnancies are terminated. This allows the mares to be bred twice a year, thus doubling the profit.

We call on the German government and the EU Commission to ban the import, extraction, and use of PMSG.
